Chapter 5: Eighteen Days

EIGHTEEN DAYS

The next few days went by quickly. Bill liked Marty because he could play with him every day. He showed Marty around the island. The two of them ran around the beach and played hide-n-seek in the caves.

Bill had told Marty all about the people on the island and their stories. Even some secrets. Though Bill did not seem very sad, the stories he told about their childhood did not seem like happy stories to Marty.

Marty had learnt that the three friends- Zuri, Tony and Bill were actually orphans. They did not know who or where their parents were. They just knew that this island was their home, and the people in it were their family of sorts. The three of them had become friends over 10 years ago, when Bill was just a baby, and had remained together ever since.

Bill also told Marty about some funny things they did together.

Marty was not as scared as he was on the day he was kidnapped, but he didn't want to stay there for a long time. He hated how the criminals looked and he didn't have his cushy bed and fluffy pancakes when he wanted them. He hoped this was a bad dream and wished he could get out of there soon.

He missed home.

Four days later, a dog came running towards Zuri.

“It's him!” “It’s Toto!” said Bill excitedly.
“You have a dog too?” asked Marty.
“Yes”, said Tony.

Marty loved dogs. He always wished he had one back home. But his mom wouldn’t allow him to. She always said, it needed responsibility to take care of another creature, and Marty was not responsible enough.

When Marty first saw him, he thought Toto had an ugly face. He was also short, fat and was drooling all over himself. But, just five minutes later Marty fell in love with him. Toto was a fun and clumsy English Bull dog. He always got stuck in the mud. Once, he almost drowned in the sea, and Zuri rescued him by going into the cold water.

Marty, Zuri, Tony and Bill were good friends now.

One day when Marty was playing hide-n-seek with Bill, he went to hide behind a large rock made of Cobblestone. The rock had a hole about six inches wide, through which Marty saw something glittering.

He went closer and peeked through. He could see crystals of different colours reflecting the sunlight, which made them shine and sparkle. There also were two strange looking people arguing loudly. One of them had a metallic hand, and the other had a pirate patch on his eye and a rather large tattoo of a dragon on his neck.

The man with the metallic hand tossed out a crumpled yellow paper straight through the hole.

“This is useless!” yelled the man. Marty quietly leaned forward and picked it up and sneaked away to a safe corner.

He opened up the paper. It had a weird drawing on it. Something that looked like a large piece of rock and some arrows. At first glance, it looked useless. But when Marty look closely he thought that it was probably showing him how to escape from the island.

He felt a rush of excitement run through him. Could this piece of paper take him home?
